Local Authorities

Buying green electricity provides a number of benefits to local authorities with many having already signed up to get a proportion of their electricity supplied from renewable sources.

Green electricity can:

• Meet environmental targets for the reduction of CO2 emissions from local authority owned properties.
• Publicly demonstrate the local authority's commitment to sustainability.
• Put LA21 objectives into practise.
• Aid local employment by promoting the renewable energy industry.
• Avoid the climate change levy.

Of course local authorities can buy renewable energy on the open market: many do. But they also have the opportunity to do more – to use their purchasing power to encourage generators to build more capacity. That way local authorities are helping to increase the supply of renewable energy rather than raising the price by competing for a limited supply.
